Aliens For Thought: District 9

Just when you thought it was safe to step out of the house… Aliens have invaded the public space. Oh no! Our human race has been threatened!

Or has it?

On the surface, District 9 may be a typical sci-fi movie with humans being once again, aggressors to the seemingly harmless alien race. However, District 9 offers that, and more; if you are willing to leave your day’s troubles by the gates to the cinema and peel away the layers of its content. (That was what left me beaming after I left the theatres. Seriously!)

Meet Wikus. He looks like nothing more than a smarter version of Bruno with more clothes on. Also, a pretty decent chap. Until you hear about how he got his job and later, his title as a leader for a special mission.

You see, Wikus works for a corporation Multinational United (MNU). It is specially set up by the government to address any issues with regards to the “prawns” (the degrading name the public uses for these aliens) living in District 9. Hence, the title of the movie.

The rest of the movie surrounds the Wikus, more aliens, a select few and the relocation of District 9 (newly named as District 10). Though really the movie focuses on Wikus. I will not be giving anything away for now.

What I can say is that… The ending was evocative.

District 9: Rise of the Prawns anyone? 😀
